Unstintingly generous with encouragement and support for students and colleagues, in joyous times as in troubled ones, he showed us that remaining true to yourself needn't be all for yourself. Thanks, Phil; from Steve.

For years definitive confirmation of the start of the rugby season was picking Phil up on the way to Mannerians. The number of students he encouraged to play at Hamians is legion - All part of his overall desire to see them flourish academically and otherwise.

Cousin Phillip is in one of the earliest folders of my childhood memories. As a young lad around 8 years old , so maybe 1975. I would often be playing/staying at grandparents on Elmshearst Creasent. Well one day, along comes this large chap driving along in a three wheeler, which was in itself very odd/amazing to see. Squeezes him self out and introduces himself as Phillip, a cousin of mine. The grandparents verify this statement. He sees my awe of the strange alien vehicle, and before I know it we’re zooming around the Estate to the roar of a large lawn mower type engine, he even lets me steer a bit. It blew me away. He said he’d come back soon, and he did. I didn’t think he would, why would he want to. But this time he took his young cousin to kenwood house, with cricket bats and football. I’m sure there would’ve been ice cream in there somewhere. He was intent to show happiness is around, and he introduced me to it all those years ago.
Much thoughts for all his family.
